Imladris itself was founded as a refuge for those fleeing the fall of Eregion during the War of the Elves and Sauron in the Second Age.  There, located beside the Loudwater is Elrond's House, the Last Homely House West of the Mountains, beyond the Edge of the Wild.  It is where Thorin and Company and one Bilbo Baggins were supplied and their map read by Elrond.  It is where Gandalf sent Frodo and the Ring for safekeeping and from where the Fellowship of the Ring set off on its quest to the Cracks of Doom after the Council of Elrond met.  It is the home of Elrond Half-elven, mighty among Elves and Men.
